[RailwayBullShippersGroup] Stockyard List Circa 1921
The question has been raised as why California is not on the list. National Provisioner was published weekly in 1921, which is Vol #65. Without the issue number, one will have to search the entire year’s publication to find the correct page 23. This is what I found on line.
I do live about 20 miles from a library that does have back issues of National Provisioner. I may have to make a visit to see why California is not on the list.

Doug and Friends, California had two major stockyards, South San Francisco and Los Angeles, plus a lot of smaller ones serving local needs. Heck, there was even an ostrich farm/stockyard big enough to have its own narrow gauge railway system. Attached is an early postcard of the South San Francisco stock yards. Yours Aye, Garth Groff 🦆

A day or so ago, I responded to a mention of a Stockyard in Watertown MA, by mentioning that there were stockyards in Allston. Allston and Brighton, mentioned in Doug’s listing below, are adjacent neighborhoods in Boston. Looking to refresh my memory, I went to the BAHS web pages - http://www.bahistory.org/ to look at the Sanborn maps there; The 1899 maps show interesting things about the area, in particular, map 37, which includes a siding to the “Boston Slaughtering and Melting Associates, conveniently located directly adjacent to the Charles River. This line must have been something like the topography resulting in the MR article years ago “The case for the non-branching branch,” as the BS&MA location is much lower than the main line.
The 1909 Map is a little more interesting. Map 15 shows the Brighton Stock Yards (scroll down a little) on the left (south of the main line) and the B&A Paint Shop alongside the main line. Map 25 shows win roundhouses for the B&A, as well as a mysterious roundhouse in the lower right corner - mysterious because in modern times, there’s no space for it there. A puzzling find. Map 23 shows the extension of the yard tracks to the west, serving a major coal trestle.
1916 maps 03 and 14 show the continued existence of the Boston Slaughtering & Melting Association along the river.
And in 1925, maps 3 and 14 continue to show this, with pleasant street title added, Abbatoir Ave. Map 15 shows the Brighton Stock Yards still there, 23 and 25 show the enormous expansion of the Beacon Park yard and engine terminal.
Perhaps more than you want to know, but the evolution of the rail-served businesses in the Allston/Brighton area is interesting. The only trace of all this that remained ‘til recently was the “Stockyards” restaurant, which had a NH (IIRC) diner well above the level of the main line, integrated into the restaurant proper. It was removes several years ago.
