Rapido single sheathed box cars
Steve SANDIFER
Have these cars hit the stores yet? The Rapido website says they are in stores but I have not received the ones I pre-ordered.

I received six Rapido SP B-50-12 cars about 10 days ago, if that is what you mean.

I will chime in that mine arrive tomorrow according to USPS. Will be interesting to see how this group weathers them.
Tony's Train Exchange has them in stock (https://tonystrains.com/manufacturers/rapido) They also have the C&O car too. -- ------------------- RJ Dial Mendocino, CA |

That point about weathering is on my mind too. I’m looking at my B&O car in the old brown colour and starting to consider the options. I notice the car body uses grooves to delineate the side sheathing. While the grooves are reasonably done, i’ll want to be wary about weathering the car in a way that accentuates them, and instead focus on toning down the overall “model” appearance. I built a few of the HO scale Tichy USRA single-sheathed box cars several years ago. Here’s my B&O version in a weathered appearance for my late 1926 layout. https://i0.wp.com/designbuildop.hansmanns.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/201610_bando_final.jpg
I added Archer rivet decals to the sides of the end castings on several of these Tichy kits before they were painted.

That's some fine weathering, Eric! Super realistic. On 10/6/2022 12:30 PM, Eric Hansmann wrote:

Love the weathering Eric, and the chalk marks look like many photos of older cars I have seen. Fenton On Thu, Oct 6, 2022 at 1:10 PM Tim O'Connor <timboconnor@...> wrote:

Very nicely done, Your SS boxcar makes me wish the 2020 tool makers would have taken a lesson from Tichy’s approach to the individual boards and quit replicating the wood sides with groves. -- Charlie Duckworth Omaha, Ne. |

Thank you, Tim. I wanted the reweigh and repack lettering to stand out from the rest, plus show a couple areas that were spot painted.

Thank you, Fenton! I use Prismacolor 10% cool grey pencil for most of the chalk marks. I find it easier to add them after the weathering wash and Pan Pastels have been applied. I just need to keep the pencil tip sharp!

Many thanks, Paul. I just uploaded photos and text for an in-depth weathering blog post. It should appear overnight to enjoy with your breakfast.

Thank you, Charlie. I enjoyed building the Tichy kits and adding the proper extras. The Westerfield decal sets make it easy to letter for the 1926 appearance, which is close to as-built.
I also am a bit surprised with the recent photos of the Rapido models.

Thanks, Tony. And yes, they would be bolt heads not rivets. Now I wonder if I used too small of an Archer detail for those things…..
