Rapido single sheathed box cars

Yes. I’m at the Mid-Atlantic RPM and away from my archive. I’ve got an image of an ad featuring this roof on an M-15 class car. The seam caps do not extend to the edge of the roof.

Eric, so are you saying the car in this photo differs from the roof on the Rapido B&O model?  I recall discussing this topic last year when this model was first announced by Rapido.

Off line, I asked a fellow who would know more on this because of his role with the CPHA documents library; his answer is that the date is uncertain at present. What he can say is that the Spans the World lettering (late 40s) includes the lines. The earliest stencil drawing without them he has seen is from 1951. So, it is approximately 1950.

Thanks, Rob, just what I needed.

Thanks Tim - that helps pin the date down a little more tightly.  I’ve passed it along.

Tony,

Builder's photos show new CPR boxcars were delivered with the lines as late as Jan 1953. It seems that the lines were not applied starting in 1954 based on the accurate lettering produced by CDS.

Thanks, John, that is probably exactly what I need. But do you know about repainting? That is, when did shops stop using lines? Could be the same time, or . . .

Tony,

Since CPR stopping having new cars delivered lettered with lines in 1954 it seems likely CP instructed its car shops to stop repainting cars with the lines at the same time in 1954. (This is approximately the date when CP introduced the script lettering on box cars.)

Of course, with some 87,000 freight cars it took the CPR many years to have most of its cars repainted without the lines. CPR cars with the lines could be seen for decades after 1954.

The Rapido model without lines would be appropriate for a car in service from 1954 to mid 1970s. The Rapido model with lines would be appropriate for a car in service from 1921 until mid 1970s.

Thanks, John, excellent again. Tony

The CP script didn’t start until the 60’s.

I agree I’ve seen lines on CP cars repainted into the mid 50’s.

I got the early cars with lines and a 1953 Winnipeg reweigh date just to be safe myself.

An example of the box car you cite. However, lines were applied later than January - check out the gondola.
