The prototype ferry is still running on Lake Michigan, but no longer carries rail cars.

Yes the car ferry is an amazing piece. 100% scratch built by Jesse Smith, a close friend of mine who is a retired C&O, Chessie & CSX engineer. Robert J Miller CFA The Spartan's sister ferry Badger is the one that is still running, Spartan is in layup and used for parts. I spent the night in one of Badger's Pullman like staterooms and made the trip across Lake Michigan the next day. The best part of the trip was a tour of the engine and fire rooms, that was 10 years ago. Bob Weston
