Scaletrains HO PS-1 40' boxcar

Scaletrains made the announcement of their kit classic PS-1 boxcar.  The artwork dates are later 40's to early 50's.

As they note, this is just the MTH PS-1. Since we already have several better options Kadee, Intermountain, Tangent, Accurail and others it was a curious release to me.

Incredible, in my opinion -- It's not hard to find 100% accurate KADEE models for $20 or less and all of the
Kadee cars (except the ridiculous special run collector cars) are correctly lettered and numbered. I have quite
a few I plan to sell off because they don't fit my time period anymore.

Tim, you imply that the Scale Trains PS-1 aren’t 100% accurate, correct? I could use a few PS-1 boxcars lettered for Eastern roads, and I’ve been holding off planning to buy Kadee. If these are accurate, I may get a couple of cars.

The MN&S car is not for this time period, it is 60's and later

I was a bit surprised by the Scale Trains PS-1's as it seems like they are intended to be the Blue Box cars of the 2020's with everything cast on.  I took a couple of pictures with my phone.  I hope the come through embedded in the text, like this.

They also displayed test shot of PFE Reefer

and a Gondola, that I wondered if it were Pennsy.  I apparently failed to get a side view.

Although I was talking to Shane Wilson, he would only allow that these were test shots for future products a ways out in the future.  I thought the PFE reefer might be a plywood side car, but he said that it was steel car.

Just now, it occurs to me that these all might be some ex-MTH cars coming into the Scale Trains line.  Didn't MTH have a PS-1, PFE Reefer and a gondola too?

Can confirm the reefer is also ex MTH. MTH had what they called a 70 ton mill gon. It was similiar to Bethlehem and Greenville cars, but I never looked at it too closely since Proto and tangent had those covered.

They didn’t have a 40 ft gon. Be interesting to see the side.

Looking at the pics again from Steve they came they stacked and not embedded so the gon looked the same length as the reefer. If it is longer it’s ex MTH tooling.

The PFE reefer is most definitely the plywood side -24 car. Steve, your excellent posted photo very clearly shows the under frame of the wood cars. Also the panel count is for the -24 car.

Dick Harley covered these cars on his Smugmug site:

https://harley-trains.smugmug.com/PFEModels/PFE-Wood-Ice-Reefer-Models/R-30-24/

MTH described them wrong and it looks like Scale Trains will continue the tradition.

I surprised myself - I have only one C&O Kadee model - a 50 foot box car ! My other C&O models are all kits - or hopper cars.
