Southern Railway Pulpwood Cars

Scott Richard <rlscott5709@...>

About 50 years ago the Southern Railway made several
thousand pulpwood cars from old boxcars, numbering
them in their 126000-129547 series. The boxcar's
roof, sides, and floor were removed. Steel side sills
and a "v" shaped floor were attached to the original
steel underframe, and bulkheads were built up at each
end incorporating the boxcar's corrugated ends. The
conversions were performed at the Spencer shops, and
the process was mentioned in an article that appeared
in the April 1953 issue of "Modern Railroads."

I would like to perform the same conversion starting
with an O-scale styrene boxcar. I'm trying to locate
some prototype photos of these cars to help me with
the details. Would any of you happen to have any
photos of these wood-rack cars that I could have
copied, or could you refer me to anyone who might?

Thanks,
Dick Scott

Hi Dick,

I don't have any information on Southern wood
racks, but I am building a series of Seaboard wood
racks and have documented the progress on my
PhotoPoint site. It's in HO scale but you might
find some of the information and photos useful.

If you're interested, just click on the "tag"
below to get to my PhotoPoint site. Check out
the folder that says "Models: Wood Racks". Hope
it helps.
