Southern Reverse Route Instructions for Refrigerator cars 1-18-1955

George Eichelberger

These (attached) instructions on where to return refrigerator cars were distributed periodically. (3 parts, 1 large page)

Because the Southern originated banana traffic out of the Port of Charleston, when a banana boat was due to arrive, instructions were to "capture" various empty refrig. reporting marks and send them there for loading. Although most loads from Southern's banana pier left town on the SR to the midwest, some loads were interchanged with both the Coast Line and Seaboard. Banana traffic up and down the east coast was not heavy because ports such as Jacksonville and Tampa were also unloaded bananas.
