SP B-50-18 Box Car Question

Hello Group,

I'm interested in making this SP box car. I was wondering if I would be better off starting with a red caboose kit or getting the body and ends from Yarmouth Model Works.  Also does anyone know what decals are available for the billboard lettering.  I'm in the dark here and I'm know where close to being an SP guy.

In HO scale, only Red Caboose* made the 10-0 1937 AAR body with S-corner ends. It's 100% accurate
for the SP B-50-18. Champ, Microscale, and Speedwitch all made/make the correct lettering. Probably Clover
House, and others as well. Evidently Highball Graphics offers them too! (Are those ex-Mask Island?)

The Speedwitch sets (Ted Culotta) are probably the most accurate. Other brands often use commercial computer
fonts or make other mistakes. But only hard-core SP modelers care about that. :-)

Yes I'd forgotten Protocraft ! For us post-1963 modelers things are far tougher. The
AAR journal loads changed at that time (from 169000 to 177000 for a "50 ton" car)
and every single steam era freight car had to be re-stenciled to reflect it. But as you
can see in the set, not a single reweigh date after 1959... 🙁

Thanks to all for getting me in the right direction for getting this car done. After doing this one I have noticed some things wrong with this car and will be redoing it. I also was trying to recreate the white wash effect on the prototype picture, don’t know how I feel about it.

based on your prototype photo, I think more severe spillage is called for. try using dry brush
media like the weathering powders out there. these tend to eliminate the liquid evaporation look.
then overcoat with a clear flat finish, just enough to fix them (protect them from finger smears)

What Tim O said. Needs more streaks and ALL the streaks taper down. The white patch on the model by the door stop appears upside-down.
