SP R-40-10 Question
golden1014
Gents, I'm working on a model of an PFE R-40-10, circa 1949. The prototype I'm interested in is the original paint with SP emblem only. In Focus on Freight Cars, Vol. 3, Ted Culotta says the cars were not delivered with placard boards on the sides or ends. Does anyone know if the cars received placard boards in the late 40s? The issue is I've already installed placard boards on the ends. Did later PFE R-40-10s with the UP -and- SP monograms have placard boards in the late 40s? I've done some photo searching on my computer and on line. I haven't found a big sample of car photos, but iNteresting that the only cars that seem to have placard boards are models... Hi, John. Yes, and would likely have been repainted at the same time. PFE was quick to repaint in that era.
Yes to this also, numerous photos exist. But I doubt that any lacking side boards would have had end boards. You might need to take those off. |

John, this is the ONLY photo I have seen of an R-40-10 with dual heralds and NO placard boards anywhere, not even on the end of the car ! I don't know the date of this photo or whether the UP herald is in color, or is black & white. My guess is that this is earlier than the 1949 black & white scheme. Great pictures. What is the meaning of "P&L" paint scheme? On 3/28/2023 3:42 PM, Dan Smith wrote: Here are a couple of -40s repaints and both have no placards. --

P&L is standard for paint and lettering.

HI Tony, and Tim and All,
Thanks for the reply. The model is an old Intermountain O scale car. Thanks to your responses I think I'll go with the double-herald car, and remove the end boards. That should be pretty typical. I'm also glad you sent the pictures because I didn't know the tabs were black. Glad I didn't miss that detail before I finished the car. John Golden |

Before you go any further look at https://sphts.smugmug.com/PFE or https://harley-trains.smugmug.com/PFETrainPhotos/ Also there are extensive articles and documents about each class on the harleytrains.smugmug.com/PFE site. Another recently published document is Ted Culotta's https://speedwitchmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/PFE-early-1950s-fleet-RPMEast-2023.pdf.
Dick Harley along with Tony Thompson and Ted Culotta are the best current sources about PFE. -- Ken Adams Covid Variants may come and go but I choose to still live mostly in splendid Shelter In Place solitude Location: About half way up Walnut Creek Owner PlasticFreightCarBuilders@groups.io |

Be sure you get the right version of the UP emblem used on PFE cars which changed a lot between 1946 and 1952.
