Stock car question (External Horizontal Visor Boards)

Robert G P

Hello everyone,

Im curious if there were any standard gauge stock cars which lasted into at least the mid 1950s that had external horizontal boards along the upper sides that wouldve acted as a visor for the animals?

Im sure many of you know exactly what I mean, quite a few cars had this feature in the late 19th and early 20th century, but I havent been able to find evidence if any car with this appearance lasted post 30s. I presume many of the cars still soldiered on, but in somewhat of a refurbished state.

This design was common on narrow gauge stock cars too. And a photo attached shows a D&RGW specimen.

Many thanks,
Rob

I'll add on, I'm not sure if the external horizontal boards have structural merit or what, but do know in warmer regions of the world where the sun has more direct rays many passenger coaches had planking such as that with the intention of being a visor for occupants.

If this is more of a structural detail rather than superfluous, id like to know why its design didnt persist and the cars of this design on standard gauge were seemingly phased out by the mid 20th century?

Many thanks,
Rob

Many CP stock cars had the top part of the side as a solid sun block -- but they were not 'external'

The D&RGW car in the foreground is a double deck car, and there are no interior boards on the upper deck.  So in this case, at least, the boards were there to keep the sheep in.

By the way, those boards are attached by lots of big slotted-head wood screws.
