I suppose it could be.....It's odd that they didn't paint it if it is a conversion.

On sober reflection, my answer to the original post is that it hard to believe that any firm would put their logo on top of the tank, especially since they haven't bothered putting it on the sides which are normally in view. Painting reporting marks and car numbers on the tank top might be useful to the personnel loading or unloading the car; a logo hardly. Much more likely that it's a rusted patch. Jeff questions why it would be left unpainted. Perhaps it was painted, but poorly prepped and has shed most of its paint. Such things happen, especially when work is done under adverse conditions. This is a UTLX car. There is a nice photo of one like it in one of Kalmbach’s Freight Car books. There were a bunch of them numbered between 950 and 1027. They were Class Z cars (not UTLX designed.)

The under frame looks like an SSCC under frame and as to the "UTC", that could be the rebuilder that converted the car. Claus, bent staff shafts on tank and flat car hand brakes do appear in photos. Dan Smith |

This one looks like Standard Tank Car construction with the end tank bands very near the heads. I see STC in the data at the right hand end data, too.
UTLX bought several batches of STC cars in the early 20’s, more details in the book.
I believe that the extra compartment was added later when on of the two safety valves on the main dome became unnecessary and was removed.

These are the cars I remember from a summer working at the Upjohn Company (pharmaceuticals) in 1965, and at paper companies in Kalamazoo. Unless your online industries include a major refinery or chemical plant with dedicated cars, or a distributor for the refined products, I think these black cars should predominate in your tank car fleet.
Does anyone (still) make the diamond shape placards that warned of the specific hazardous material in such cars?
