Tank car with the logo on top of the tank?

Could that be a rusty plate over the former location of an expansion dome for a car converted to two compartments and now converted back to a single compartment car?

That looks more like the location of a dome that has been removed. And it's rusty?

those two compartment cars with the vastly unequal sized compartments look just perfect to deliver a 'shot n beer'.I'll drink to that!
On sober reflection, my answer to the original post is that it hard to believe that any firm would put their logo on top of the tank, especially since they haven't bothered putting it on the sides which are normally in view. Painting reporting marks and car numbers on the tank top might be useful to the personnel loading or unloading the car; a logo hardly.
Much more likely that it's a rusted patch. Jeff questions why it would be left unpainted. Perhaps it was painted, but poorly prepped and has shed most of its paint. Such things happen, especially when work is done under adverse conditions.

This is a UTLX car. There is a nice photo of one like it in one of Kalmbach’s Freight Car books. There were a bunch of them numbered between 950 and 1027. They were Class Z cars (not UTLX designed.)

Great to see the Tydol / Veedol tank car from the Jim Gerstly collection.
Here is another one taken as a screen grab from the film " Freight Train (1954) on youtube.

Yup. That’s the one I saw. Someday, I might actually finish the model I started from an IMRC tank and at SC&F underframe

Maybe something like this one.

Cool tank car! But -- the tank appears to say "UTC" as the builder, but that underframe looks
like something from Pennsylvania Tank Car or maybe General American ?

Hi List Members,
Notice on the image that the vertical brake wheel staff is out of plumb.
This happens to my models all the time - nice to know it is prototypical!
How common was this in real life?

This one looks like Standard Tank Car construction with the end tank bands very near the heads. I see STC in the data at the right hand end data, too.
UTLX bought several batches of STC cars in the early 20’s, more details in the book.
I believe that the extra compartment was added later when on of the two safety valves on the main dome became unnecessary and was removed.

Thanks Steve. Here's another UTLX STC tank car, an Ebay grab shot.

Freight cars get damaged all the time. A car inspector will do a walk through of cars and
bad order any car he thinks needs to be repaired. Woe to the person who refuses him. :-)
(Had a conversation once with a Guilford car inspector.)

Hi Tim,
The under frame looks like an SSCC under frame and as to the "UTC", that could be the rebuilder that converted the car.
Claus, bent staff shafts on tank and flat car hand brakes do appear in photos.

These are the cars I remember from a summer working at the Upjohn Company (pharmaceuticals) in 1965, and at paper companies in Kalamazoo. Unless your online industries include a major refinery or chemical plant with dedicated cars, or a distributor for the refined products, I think these black cars should predominate in your tank car fleet.
Does anyone (still) make the diamond shape placards that warned of the specific hazardous material in such cars?

Not placards, but placard frames. And yes Plano makes etched metal HO scale tank car placard frames - item #310
