Union Tank Car Company UTLX. 74450

I built and upgraded Southern Car & Foundry Tank car resin kit 2005.  It is a different design 8,000 gallon tank car as it has a 6 course radial tank with different safety valve location that I lettered for Union Tank Car (UTLX) and numbered 74450.  Upgrade includes AB brakes, handrails and making brake staff end straps from brass.  If you are interested in the build of resin UTLX tank car 74450, photos and write up of the build process including painting, lettering from National Scale Car and weathering are now available on my blog I have to share photos and writeup of modeling projects on my Minneapolis & Northland Railroad Company.  If you would like to take a look please do at the following link:

Very nice build, Lester. One word of caution about using styrene strip for tank bands for others building SC&F kits. I primed one of my kits using Tamiya Fine Light Gray Surface Primer (lacquer) and one of the bands parted just above the stanchion hole. I didn’t glue the strap to the tank along the entire surface of the band, so about an inch of band popped up. I was able to glue the strap down, then sand the joint lightly and shot a little primer over the repair so that it’s no longer visible. If you use styrene bands, be sure to glue the band to the tank on both sides of the stanchions, as the stanchion hole weakens the band, and organic solvent based primers and paints may soften the styrene, breaking the band. Usually, I use YMW etched brass tank bands, but I decided to use styrene for the SC&F car since it was provided in the kit. This issue is moot if you use acrylic primers and paints as Lester did.
