UP stock cars questions
Hi Brent,
We did a UP stock car years ago as a Shake n Take project and there was a bunch of reference material stored in the SnT files area that should be accessible to you.

Subject: [RealSTMFC] UP stock cars questions
I am not a UP modeler for the most part, so I don't have much UP reference material available in my library. That said I have become increasingly interested in the variety within the UP stock car fleet. Is there a good single reference for UP stock cars available (drawings, class listings, photos, eras, erc.)?
If not in a single source, can anyone point me to some key references that could have the important information for prototype modeling of essential car groups?
Sincere thanks,
Brent Greer

Also, the ancient ATHEARN "blue box" stock car is a UP S-40-12. The great mistake was the
reversal of the roof panels, but the truth is that if you make minor corrections to the model (make
the doors more accurate, and replace the running board, handbrake, and sill steps) you'll never notice
the roof error when a train is running past on the layout...
And Marklin-Trix produced an almost entirely accurate UP S-40-12 (the Talgo trucks can be replaced).
Westerfield still offers Harriman era stock cars of several classes, and I think Speedwitch offered a
modified Red Caboose SP Harriman stock car to model some UP cars.

I will check my personal correspondence with Greg to see if I can figure out/remember who it was.

Shortly before he was stricken with Covid Greg Martin told me he was considering rerunning the ends for the S'n'T car (which are the critical part for the kitbash). I don't who who had or has the masters for that.

The UPHS did the S-40-6 in HO. There was a choice of pre or post 1955 paint scheme.
The post 1955 paint scheme is still available and can be seen at this url

Go to the Shake n Take IO group site. There are at least 10 files there with some material. There should be some pictures in the Photos area too.
You can start here

What are the SnT files for the UP Stock Car called? I could not find them.

Attached is a photo of the S-40-6 from the UP Historical Society. Very nice kit, but I did a few upgrades to it. I have included a couple of in progress photos as well of this pre-painted kit that show my additions

Nice! I love the Carmer levers.

What a wonderful build! While it is a stock car, that is not a “stock” kit build. The additions to the pre-painted are real eye candy and reveal the detail exceptionally well.

The UPHS site does not describe the nature of the kit, although I found these posts from the Railway Bull Shippers list in 2021. They describes it as a flat, pre-lettered kit, seemingly derived from the Red Caboose model. George (or anyone) can you provide more info about the nature of the kit, i.e. resin or plastic, pre-lettered, etc?
