UP stock cars questions

Brent Greer

I am not a UP modeler for the most part, so I don't have much UP reference material available in my library.   That said I have become increasingly interested in the variety within the UP stock car fleet.  Is there a good single reference for UP stock cars available (drawings, class listings, photos, eras, erc.)?

If not in a single source, can anyone point me to some key references that could have the important information for prototype modeling of essential car groups?

Sincere thanks,
Brent Greer

Hi Brent,

We did a UP stock car years ago as a Shake n Take project and there was a bunch of reference material stored in the SnT files area that should be accessible to you.

Also, the ancient ATHEARN "blue box" stock car is a UP S-40-12. The great mistake was the
reversal of the roof panels, but the truth is that if you make minor corrections to the model (make
the doors more accurate, and replace the running board, handbrake, and sill steps) you'll never notice
the roof error when a train is running past on the layout...

And Marklin-Trix produced an almost entirely accurate UP S-40-12 (the Talgo trucks can be replaced).

Westerfield still offers Harriman era stock cars of several classes, and I think Speedwitch offered a
modified Red Caboose SP Harriman stock car to model some UP cars.

I think the UPHS had an article in their Streamliner publication about the UP stock cars through the years. Sorry but I don’t know what issue it was.

Brent, The UPHS has a couple of models also

I was able to quickly check, and I was right. The article is "Union Pacific RR Stock Car Fleet 1938-1971." It's in the Spring 2009 Streamliner (Vol.23, No. 2) at page 32. There's photos and a detailed spreadsheet. Plus there's an article in the same issue on the anatomy of a livestock special, also with several photos. Both are by Dick Harley, and both are very well done..

Shortly before he was stricken with Covid Greg Martin told me he was considering rerunning the ends for the S'n'T car (which are the critical part for the kitbash). I don't who who had or has the masters for that.

Hi,

The UPHS did the S-40-6 in HO. There was a choice of pre or post 1955 paint scheme.

The post 1955 paint scheme is still available and can be seen at this url

What are the SnT files for the UP Stock Car called?  I could not find them.

Steve and Barb Hile

Go to the Shake n Take IO group site.  There are at least 10 files there with some material.  There should be some pictures in the Photos area too.

You can start here

I did a couple of those S-40-6 UP double deck stock cars.  At the time I ordered them I didn't know they were double deck, so I don't know how likely it was that they ever would have made it down to south-central Kansas, but what the heck.  Still nice and small cars.  They're pre-lettered.

Attached is a photo of the S-40-6 from the UP Historical Society. Very nice kit, but I did a few upgrades to it. I have included a couple of in progress photos as well of this pre-painted kit that show my additions

What a wonderful build!  While it is a stock car, that is not a “stock” kit build.  The additions to the pre-painted are real eye candy and reveal the detail exceptionally well.

Very nice work indeed, thank you for sharing your photos George.

The UPHS site does not describe the nature of the kit, although I found these posts from the Railway Bull Shippers list in 2021.  They describes it as a flat, pre-lettered kit, seemingly derived from the Red Caboose model.  George (or anyone) can you provide more info about the nature of the kit, i.e. resin or plastic, pre-lettered, etc?

Thanks Steve,

In fact, it was that very Shake-n-Take project that made me want to learn about the other UP stock car classes.

Richard Townsend generously scanned a copy of the Streamliner issue that discusses stock cars for me, so I'm hoping that will give me what I need.

In regard to the castings from the Shake-n-Take project, I talked with Greg about these prior to his passing.   He had the masters at his home, with the intent of re-doing them and having them recast, but he never got around to it, and now is suspect they are lost to us.  Jon Cagle did the resin casting for that project,  but he informed me recently that those molds are gone and nothing remains.

So with that in mind, if anything this list has a set of the ex-autocar ends from the UP stock car project that they would loan to me, I will have several sets of duplicates made by Jon or Chad and return your originals, (plus a set or two of the new ones if you wish).  Please look through your stashes and let me know.

Thanks to everyone for their help and information!

Brent
