URTX refrigerator cars

chrislantz@att.net

I’m heading the restoration to restore 3 ice bunker refrigerator cars at the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  I’m looking for in service photos of cars of that same series as ours we can use for the announcement of the restoration project as well as for our fundraising purposes.  The oldest car URTX 37314 was
built in 1948 and is part of a series of cars numbering from 37000 to 37974.  The other two cars 63605 and 63610 were built in August of 1954.  I appreciate any help on images.

This one has a number close to your two cars…

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Chris,
The cars of interest were built by GATC in various series and build dates.

37000-37499, GATC B.O. 2999, approximately 482 cars built ca. 10-48 and possibly production carry-over into 1949

37500-37974, GATC B.O. number unknown to me, 475 cars built ca. 6-50

37975-37999, GATC B.O. number unknown to me, 25 cars built 7-50

38000-39099, GATC B.O. 8059-B, 100 cars built ca. 12-54

Over time were numerous renumberings, mainly starting in 1959 to the early 1960s & later.

The Pullman Library has original 8x10 GATC builder photos of these cars (37007, 37727, 37977, 38097) from the Frank H. Peacock Collection. Also included are numerous interior photos of 37007. Low-resolution images are seen at the Pullman Library Smugmug website at https://pullman-lib.smugmug.com/Frank-Peacock-GATX-Builders-Photos. Click the link GATC Reefers-Steel.

In-service color photos appear in the Refrigerator Car Color Guide by Gene Green (Morning Sun Books), some being original car numbers & others renumbered when leased to various packing companies typically in the 1960s. Black & white photos are available from Bob’s Photo to include 37265 & 38605. Bob’s Photo also has 60681, a renumbered car ca. 9/61 leased to Raskin Packing Co. and 72706 ca. 5/60 leased to Black Hills Packing Co. Bob Liljestrand may have more, but be advised he has been selling some of his negatives. Attached is a scan of URTX 37473 taken by W.E. Frost on 9/16/49, seen on the City of Vancouver website. Undoubtedly there are many more in-service photos from other sources.

Hope this helps & wishing the best for the project.
Regards,
Ed Hawkins

Thanks for the help everyone. In the Pullman Library images the cars appear to be yellow rather than orange. Were they all yellow when built and later painted orange?

Chris

from looking at numerous photos, it seems like Dubuque switched to a very light yellow paint scheme in the 1960's

on the other hand I can't find any orange color photos of these particular cars, even looking through books...

Anyone have info on the Erie URTX car #37808 as seen in the Erie/DL&W color guide. Was it "one of kind"? Someone once mentioned the number series is in line with the Milw cars.

Bud, Larry DeYoung, who wrote the book you refer to, says to me:

It was not one-of-a-kind, but I don’t know how many there were or if they were in a compact number sequence or scattered around in the URTX group for cars of that type.

Larry

I would think these would be listed in the ORER, but at the moment I don’t know quite where to look in my copy.  What era are you looking to find?

Schuyler

Schuyler,
Thanks for that info and to Mr DeYoung as well. I was mainly concerned if it was a legit roster car as it seemed it could have been a one off "display" car based on the photo in the book.

Schuyler Larrabee

Yeah, and now I want to know other numbers for those cars, too . . .

One never knows enough.
