UTLX 74634 Laurel, MT 1952
A nice view of a Pennsylvania Tank Car Company tank car. It was probably built in 1920 with a number within the series 74000-74199, but was renumbered to this number before 1936’s tariff was created.

74634 no longer listed in 1970 tariff book but many sister 8k cars are still listed. I wonder
if they were of the same type as 74634. How long can a tank car last? This would be 50 years.

In the 1936 tariff, 74364 had a shell capacity of 8179 gallons with 172 gallon dome. So, similar cars in 1970 should have similar values, and there were some.
I am not an expert on life of tank cars, but 50 years is probably at the upper end. Don’t forget that tanks and safety valves ARE tested at regular intervals.
