Viking roofs

I was thinking through some planned car projects, and remembered (or thought I did) that sometime back there was developed here a list of all the box cars that got the “corrugated” Viking roofs. But I can’t find it. So I have two questions: is my memory correct? And if so, can anyone suggest a key word to search on? Any help appreciated.

I’m somewhat agog that my memory reaches back 35 years . . . but thanks much, Al. Just what I needed.

Figures. That's one of about 3 issues of Mainline Modeler I do not have. :-D

I don't recall any compilation of all of the cars with the Viking 'corrugated' roof. Ed Hawkins did specify
the type of roof in several of his roster documents, but I don't know if anyone pulled out all of the Viking
instances he shows into a single list.

If you are missing some, or a lot, of MM issues, the C&O Historical Society sells a CD with all of them.  Doesn’t handle foldouts well, but it has the material.

I don't recall ever seeing a list.

Chicago &  Northwestern had a lot, maybe even more than Erie.

I think all of Van Sweringen roads had them - Erie, NKP, PM & C&O.

I am attaching the roster from Ed Mines’ article in the November 1986 _Mainline Modeler_ issue. This is certainly “a list” but clearly was never proof-read by anyone who knew anything about the subject. Years ago, I made the marks that you see here, but I don’t claim the remainder is without fault. Still, there is a lot of info here. Comments invited.

I have no recollection of making up that list or even seeing it.

Then again, I frequently don't know what day of the week it is..

The Pere Marquette freight car book came out in 2001, long after the article appeared.

A war department related government agency had a few too.and maybe a short line like the original NS.

I need it.  Also works on a desktop.  Does not seem to be platform specific
(drivers available for either MacOS or Windows).  Under $40.

David,

Here is a link to NWHS archives based on a search of "Viking."  It appears several classes of N&W boxcars had Viking roofs; also note the first entry provides the numbers for the NKP cars.

I am researching the C&O rebuilt single door 12392-12999, 13000-13135 & double door box cars 12000-12168,13558-13828. These cars were built with 2 different roofs depending on the series. Some were Murphy Radial while others are Viking roofs. They were originally built for the Hocking Valley in 1924-1925. I have a number of photos of these cars that show either radial or flat roofs, but none showing the the actual Viking roof from above.

What I am wondering is when did the Viking corrugated roofs come out?

Would these have been an earlier Viking roof as shown in these pages from the 1925 Car Builder Cyclopedia?
