Who manufactured this car?

Hi,
Looking for some help identifying the manufacturer of this model. The model has wood sides and ends, has white metal bolsters, and has brass pieces that act as roof cross braces (not sure what to call them) and brass z-braces for vertical and diagonal side supports. I purchased this model many years ago and it has been operating on my layout. I would like to learn something about it. Thanks Chuck Cover Santa Fe, NM

Similar seam-caps were offered in several kit lines, and they were available as separate detail parts. Some were made of brass and some from thin sheet steel.

The general constuction is simialr to both Silver Streak and Ulrich kits of the period, but the car’s proportions don’t look like either. There were many other companies offering similar kits too. The riveted corner posts are unusual. Dan Mitchell ==========

Neat old model in a completely bogus paint scheme. That scheme was introduced in 1952. That type of car would be gone or on it’s way out then. I have an old Varney single sheathed box car in that same paint. As they say Flash sells ; )) Clark Propst

I still run an Ulrich box car. I bought it from Walther's as I recall, in the 1960's. But as I recall the outside Z bracing was pot metal though and not brass. It is one of my favorite models. Pat Wade Santa Barbara, CA

Not to pick too many points, Ken & Group, but---- I believe this Ulrich 'outside-braced' (sic?) boxcar kit first appeared in late 1940s Model Railroader advertising. I have not looked for it in my collection but it was out there long before 1960. I believe the first I purchased was in 1958. Two of these I used to make my first WAG box car models. See attached. You most likely are correct regarding the first date of production. I assumed that the HO Seeker info was the first date of production - and we all know the derivation of the word "assume".

I purchased this kit in October of 1960 and it carries the road name and number Pere Marquette 89920. The outside bracing is, indeed, pot metal. I have just pulled it out of service as I am thinning my fleet and feel this car is expendable. It's a nice model but dated. Jim Kubanick Morgantown WV.

The subject car appears to be a precursor of the Ulrich car with the cast metal sides. Ulrich was certainly heavily into die casting in the late fifties. I wonder if he was selling non-die cast kits earlier. Like this one.
The "late" stock car (as seen in the sample catalog page) used the same cast side structure as the box car. Unfortunately, Ulrich used low quality metals, and the models get zinc pest a lot more often than they should. I sure loved their triple hopper and GS gon, back in the day. Ed Edward Sutorik

HO Seeker publishes catalogs. The date cited may just be the date of the catalog, not the actual debut of the model.

I wonder if he was selling non-die cast kits earlier. Like this one. Yes, earlier Ulrich kits varied in a number of ways. I have an early Ulrich twin hopper with wood parts -- later those were gone. And some early brass parts were later replaced with die-cast. On the topic of this box car, as a novice modeler in the mid-1950s, I was given an unfinished kit of this car, ALL die-cast parts. I still have it, still not completed because of the botched aspects of what was done first. I've thought of posing it on the layout as a car under repair. Tony Thompson

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request to find the manufacturer of this good old M&StL single sheathed boxcar. It has always been a mystery to me and although it does not meet current standards of model freight cars, I am happy that you guys have been able to identify it as an Ulrich kit. I model the PRR's Shamokin Branch in the mid-50s and model from photographs and prototype information, however, I don't feel bad about having this car mixed in with the resin kits. Always nice to add a little color to the consists. Thanks again.
